Vinylwave album design & poster
Vinylwave
, a Norfolk based indie/rock band, commissioned me to design their album for their latest studio recording. Talks were held, ideas were discussed and thrown around and in the end it was decided that the theme should situate around the word ‘Hesitate’, as this was the given title of the album. Weeks went pass, but we couldn’t agree upon any designs that I came up with. Absolutely nothing was coming to me, so I flicked through the pages of Computer Arts magazine for inspiration. I came across an article about the London Underground Map, and I was inspired by the design.
From there, a mock-up prototype was created based upon the London Underground Map and the design was well received by the band. They soon forgot about the main ‘Hesitate’ theme. Using the philosophy “less is more”, the rainbow strip goes in and out on itself across the whole design. This is trying to broadcast the ‘wave’ theme as within the name of the band. The rainbow is the only colour used throughout the design; text would had be white, whereas photography of the band members would had be black and white.
Unfortunately, the design wasn’t used in the end. The band members felt that the design gave them the reputation of being a ‘dance’ band; valid point I suppose. The band did like the ‘wave’ metaphor that was use, but in the end, the band used photography for their final design.
The poster
I also designed a promotional poster for one of their forthcoming gigs. The design was in the same style of as the proposed album. The poster was only used to advertise the gig internally at the place of work of one of the band members. It was not used in the public arena due to copyright reasons.
