I suspect you’ve some preconception of them being held in a police cell after having a photograph taken of themselves holding a chalkboard with their name on it with a height measurement in the background with ink stained fingers after having their fingerprints taken?

Well, you’ll would be half right.Norfolk Constabulary have made a short film to promote their new state-of-the-art arrest custody centres, called Police Investigation Centres or PIC for short (pronounced ‘pic’) and I star in the film as ‘Ben Gardiner’, the main perpetrator.

The film is a journey of the arrest and custody process through the eyes of Ben Gardiner. Ben has been formally arrested for burglary and he is transported to a PIC to be charged and processed. There, he will have his biometrics taken (photo, DNA and fingerprints) and interviewed before being formerly charged and placed in a police cell.The short film was produced in-house by the Norfolk Constabulary’s digital media team.

The Harbour Centre offers the facility for medical examinations for rape and sexual assault victims without police involvement; this is to help the victim feel at ease when coming forward to report the crime.

The Harbour Centre is a venture between Norfolk Constabulary and NHS Great Yarmouth. To bring awareness to the Centre, I was task to design and construct the website, but due to the dark nature of the subject, the brief was to keep the aesthetics simple and pleasing.

It only took 3 weeks from start to finish to complete the project and the website is W3C compliant, meets accessibility, as well as working in all major browsers including Internet Explorer 6.

The Interactive Media Awards “…recognise the highest standards of excellence in website design and development and honour individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievement.” as quoted from their website and it is a worldwide recognised award.

I can’t take all the credit as the Norfolk Constabulary website was a team effort. For those involved on the project, I can honestly say that we’ve put a lot of hard work and love into the website and winning an award like the IMA just makes all that effort worthwhile.

This would be my second IM Award that I have been a part of; my first one was for the Office of Government Commerce website that was constructed in 2007.

Background
When I was asked to co-attend this year’s IoIC Awards 2010 (Institute of Internal Communications) by my client Norfolk Constabulary, I was overjoyed. The IoIC Awards, which was known as the CiB Awards, is a yearly event whereby awards are given for recognition for outstanding work for internal communications.

Norfolk Constabulary was nominated in the Online News category for their internal video podcast ‘MAST News’. MAST News is an internally produced podcast that delivers a mixture of good news stories covering the work of officers and staff. It wasn’t until March 2010 that the MAST News went external via the Norfolk Constabulary website, YouTube and Apple iTunes Store.

My initial role on the project was to deliver the MAST News on the Constabulary’s Intranet within a certain bandwidth limit, whilst keeping the quality and size of the video good enough so it gives a pleasurable experience to all.

Unfortunately we didn’t win that night, but coming runner up in a recognised national award is a great achievement for the team.

Maybe next year…
